Wasserbüffel in der Landschaftspflege
Water Buffalo In Landscape Management
Over the past 15 years, the keeping of water buffaloes has become increasingly popular in Germany. These seemingly exotic animals are not only prized for producing the popular mozzarella cheese but also serve as landscape caretakers in conservation. Nevertheless, grazing projects involving water buffaloes are still met with some skepticism. The IFWL, founded in the summer of 2008, is dedicated to its mission of "International Promotion of the Use of Water Buffaloes in Landscape Management." Among other purposes, conferences were held in Oldenburg in 2008 and in Cottbus in 2009, in collaboration with the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU), to provide both initial experiences and legal and practical foundations. Such experiences were gained, for example, by BTU students within the framework of a grazing project in the Spreeaue. The proceedings from these conferences are compiled in the present volume, including not only personal reports but also research findings and forward-thinking visions.
